Educational Testing Service (ETS) statistics on the total group of GRE test-takers allow comparison of students by their amount of work experience (a corollary of which is the number of years elapsed since completion of the undergraduate degree). The general trend seems clear: Verbal skills improve over time, while quantitative abilities deteriorate. Prospective graduate students with less than one year of full-time work experience (35% of all test-takers who responded to this question) produced average scores of approximately 151 verbal and 153 quantitative. Graduate school applicants with 20-29 years on the job received the highest mean verbal scores and the lowest average quantitative scores of any sub-group (about 154 and 147 respectively). Although such individuals comprised less than 1% of the overall sample, the total number (more than 4,000) is enough to be statistically significant. Graduate school applicants who have recently finished their undergraduate degrees may need more work on the GRE's verbal section, while those who have been out of school for a while will likely need to brush up on their quantitative skills.

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.
